Party Like It’s 1999

December 18, 2017

If you were around in 1999, you remember a few things like Y2K, dial up modems, looking up movie times in the paper, and landline phones. Ooh, and Mr. MovieFone.

Dec 17, 1999, marks the 18th anniversary of my first date with Erik. I was getting my undergrad degree, and he was in the middle of his Ph.D. and teaching a few classes (but not my classes). We’d known each other for about a year just to say “hi” but the week before this first date I had invited him to join a group going to play darts and pool at a local bar. After that night, he asked me out on a real date and he picked me up in his 1998 Mustang Cobra (a much sweeter ride than my 1992 base model Saturn).

The plan was dinner and a movie, but neither of us wanted the night to end so after eating Outback and watching Bicentennial Man, we went to play pool and darts at another nearby bar. When they closed at 2am, we went to Denny’s for pie. Finally, we couldn’t find any other places still open, so the date ended with him dropping me off at 3am on Dec 18th.

This year we went to dinner at 5:30 and were home by 7:30. I guess we’re old.

What were you doing in 1999?

I asked Supergirl if she would write a few blog posts about our real lives. We’re calling it Hank and Jane IRL, and if you don’t get the Hank and Jane reference, you need to read Errant Gods 🙂
